A statement has been issued by the Association of British Insurers (ABI) to reassure fleet drivers fitting winter tyres to their vehicles.
According to the organisation, those with a UK insurance policy in place should not receive an additional charge for cover when they swap wheels.
ABI members, who serve 90 per cent of the motor market, have made a commitment not to charge extra premiums for winter tyres, providing they meet manufacturers' specifications and are roadworthy.
However, some motorists or companies may be required to inform insurance providers if they have altered their wheels and should check whether this is the case.
"Last year cold weather came early and there was some uncertainty for customers about the insurance implications of fitting winter tyres," explained ABI director of general insurance Nick Starling.
The Highways Agency recently issued winter advice to drivers urged them to leave extra time for journeys over the cold months and ensure they are prepared for severe weather by packing an emergency kit in their vehicle and checking conditions before setting off.
