Most motor insurance policies 'do not cover road rage'

Road rage incidents are not covered by the vast majority of car insurance policies, it has been found.

According to a study by Defaqto, only one in eight products automatically provide such cover, despite the protection being a differentiator for consumers surveyed by the company.

The proportion of policies providing road rage insurance has risen since 2005 from 99 per cent to 94 per cent, with drivers aged 55 and over found to be most interested in it.

"Although this is a potentially useful benefit, the exclusions under this section are very clear and could make claiming difficult," author of the report Mike Powell cautioned.

He noted that although cover for road rage incidents may be of interest to motorists, they are advised that incidents to which the policyholder, a person they know, a relative or a passenger have contributed are excluded from claims.

With benefit limits set between £500 and £5,000 on those policies that do cover road rage, Mr Powell explained that it may be hard to prove that this did not happen.

Another recent study by Defaqto revealed that legal cover for uninsured loss recovery is only offered as standard by 21 per cent of motor insurance products, while 28 per cent do not provide it at all.
