Pubs across the UK closed their doors while the Labour government was in charge of the country, a minister has claimed.
According to Grant Shapps, the previous administration should apologise for helping to close hostelries, with a net closure of 3,530 pubs between 1997 and 2010.
The minister for local government added that tax rises, "unfair loss-leading from supermarkets" and 24-hour licensing laws had all damaged local venues.
"Pub landlords don't want state handouts. They want a level playing field and less government regulation getting in the way," he declared, highlighting new policies including scrapping Labour's cider tax, allowing local residents to save pubs and reducing red tape relating to live music as measures that will benefit the trade.
Pub insurance customers may also be interested to learn that a number of chains released financial results in July, which indicated that profits had received a boost from the warm weather and the World Cup.
Crowds of people took advantage of the sunshine to sit in beer gardens and watched matches with friends on screens set up in pubs across the country.
