The number of claims made on home insurance policies could be reduced by individuals attending DIY classes, it has been suggested.
A member of the National Home Improvement Council (NHIC) has urged retailers to provide evening tuition for young adults in particular in order to provide them with the skills necessary to carry out work on their properties.
The organisation's director, Andrew Leech, said that such classes could help householders to "learn ways of improving their house without having to call in the experts" and without making mistakes that could prove costly.
"It's a symptom of the times we in live in that young people don't grow up with these skills," the expert declared.
Homeowners seeking a UK insurance policy may also be interested to learn that Mr Leech's comments come after a Halifax survey showed 63 per cent of under-35s said they would not even attempt to put up wallpaper by themselves and 45 per cent would not be prepared to tackle shelves.
In addition, the research found that the average cost of fixing a job that has been done incorrectly by amateurs is £2,498 for younger people, compared with £838 for those aged over 45.
