End of life care services 'improving'

Charities

26th August 2010

Progress is being made in terms of end of life care in the UK, it has been claimed.

However, receiving the latest annual report on the subject, care services minister Paul Burstow suggested that more needs to be done to improve the sector.

He asserted that people should be able to access the highest standards of care in the setting of their choice.

The Department of Health study indicates that key areas of progress include the launch of the Dying Matters Coalition, the creation of e-learning opportunities for health and social care staff and a £40 million capital grant for hospices to improve the care environment.

"While there has been good progress made so far this year the variation in progress across the country means the NHS must redouble its efforts," he stated.

Care home managers seeking a UK insurance policy may also be interested to learn that the Policy Exchange has suggested the commission established to examine the issue of long-term provision of elderly care in the future should consider a taxation system to provide funding.
