A number of UK pub chains have reported increases in profits this summer as a result of the sunny weather and the World Cup.

Britain's drinkers have flocked to sit in beer gardens during the warm conditions and pub and brewing chain Fuller Smith & Turner has reported a 4.1 per cent like-for-like increase in sales during the 16 weeks to July 17th.

Chairman Michael Turner stated: "If you have hot weather it's always best to get it in May and June, before the school holidays."

Strong sales data was also reported by drinks group SABMiller for June as a result of warm weather and the international football competition, something that may be of particular interest to pub insurance customers.

Meanwhile, British Beer & Pub Association's chief executive, Brigid Simmonds, has welcomed a decision by the government to launch a new consultation on licensing legislation in the UK.

She stressed that many of the powers home secretary Theresa May has talked about are already in existence to tackle problems such as anti-social behaviour but added that the exercise will provide local people with "greater clarity".
