Britons advised to prepare for overseas trips

People travelling from the UK to foreign destinations should carry out a number of preparations before going abroad.

This is according to new advice from the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO), which suggests that actions taken ahead of trips could prevent incidents from happening.

In order to avoid claiming on a UK insurance policy while in another country, Britons are urged to spend some time researching their destination before setting off, while 19 per cent of respondents to an FCO survey currently fail to take out protection before leaving home.

The warnings are based on a report entitled British Behaviour Abroad from the government department, which highlights a lack of cover as a common preventable problem, which can result in high repatriation and medical bills, in addition to issues such as stolen passports, road traffic accidents and drink and drug-related arrests.

UK travellers can use the FCO website to find out more about places they plan to visit during overseas journeys and better prepare themselves for their visit, as well as taking precautions such as checking they have a valid European Health Insurance Card and comprehensive travel insurance in place.
