Commercial insurance

13th July 2010

The number of employment tribunals taking place in the UK rose over the past year by 56 per cent.

This is according to new official data, which show claims shot up during 2009-10, with 236,100 receipts processed.

Published by the Tribunals Service, the figures also reveal that the number of cases dealt within during the target of 26 weeks fell from 74 per cent during 2008-09 to 65 per cent.

Cost reduction strategies and job losses appear to have driven the increase, with 126,300 cases relating to breach of contract, redundancy or unfair dismissal, while 95,200 were about the working time regulations.

Firms seeking insurance for business policies may also be interested to learn that unauthorised deduction of wages was cited in 75,000 of the applications made last year.

Founded in April 2006, the Tribunals Service is charged with creating a unified system of administration for such cases and is an executive agency of the Ministry of Justice.
