Motor cover 'often does not provide courtesy car'

The majority of car insurance policies do not provide customers with a courtesy vehicle as standard, it has been revealed.
According to research carried out by Defaqto, just 23 per cent of comprehensive products automatically offer a temporary model when a driver's own is either stolen or written off.
The analysis firm discovered significant differences between provision through its poll of 5,000 consumers, including 28 per cent of policies offering courtesy cars as an optional extra when motorists purchase cover, while 49 per cent will not provide such protection.
Consumers have been urged, therefore, to check the details of their insurance carefully to ensure that they can access a temporary vehicle should they require one, with parents most likely to need this.
"Finding out that a courtesy car is not available when you need one could be very costly, especially if you have to hire a car to continue your day-to-day activities," Defaqto insight analyst for general insurance Mike Powell warned.
Meanwhile, the company also advised those seeking a UK insurance policy that 91 per cent of products do not provide protection for road rage and 92 per cent do not cover car jacking.
