Travel insurance customers urged to check EHIC

Those heading from the UK overseas on holiday this summer have been urged to ensure that they have a valid European Health Insurance Card (EHIC)
Official figures reveal that more than 188 million people now have the portable documentation or a replacement certificate, with the number increasing by 3.2 per cent since 2008.
Those seeking a UK insurance policy to take a vacation, study abroad or go on a business trip should ensure they have an EHIC and that it is in date as it "can save time, hassle and money if you fall ill or suffer an injury" during a visit.
It provides access to healthcare services for holders across the 27 member states of the European Union (EU), as well as Iceland, Switzerland, Norway and Lichtenstein, with citizens receiving equal provision to the country's nationals.
Each separate member of families should have an individual EHIC and they can be applied for from local health authorities.
However, some countries charge for certain treatment and it is still important to have a comprehensive travel insurance policy when going overseas, even within the EU.
