The threat of road rage is most worrying for drivers over the age of 55, new research has revealed.

According to a study by Defaqto, such motorists are also concerned about the risk of car jacking, although such incidents are not covered by 92 per cent of comprehensive vehicle insurance policies.

In addition, 91 per cent of car products were found not to protect against road rage incidents.

Commenting on the survey of 5,000 consumers, Defaqto insight analyst for general insurance Mike Powell advised drivers to check the details of policies carefully, adding: "Some policies provide cover for medical expenses and trauma counselling, while others include other benefits such as emergency dental treatment."

The independent financial research specialist also cautioned that some cover documents make exclusions such as assaults by persons known to the motorist or incidents initiated by policyholders.

Meanwhile, UK insurance policy customers could save significant sums by signing up to a new Motor Codes reminder programme that will alert them when their vehicle is due for an MOT.
