Taking a course in basic first aid can assist parents in managing incidents that take place in their homes, an expert has suggested.

People seeking a UK insurance policy may be interested in ways of making their homes safer for their offspring and comments made by first aid training development manager could be of assistance in this.

"Many accidents you can treat yourself, and the first few minutes are vital which is why having some first aid knowledge is important," he explained.

According to Mr James, many minor injuries can be dealt with if there is a basic knowledge of treatment, such as running cold water over burns for at least ten minutes in order to alleviate the effects and relieve pain.

However, he stressed that it is still advisable to ensure injured children see a medical professional.

The specialist's comments follow a study by the Child Accident Prenvention Trust, which revealed four children per hour are admitted to hospital after accidents in the home, despite four out of five parents of youngsters under five believing their property to be the safest place for their kids.
