UK charities 'facing a time of change'

Third sector organisations in the UK are facing a time of change and must adapt to the new economic climate and other pressures, it has been claimed.

Chair of the Charity Commission Dame Suzi Leather explained that "the sector is living through a period of unprecedented reform, upheaval, and opportunity", which will include cuts to funding.

Addressing a meeting at Westminster Central Hall earlier this month, she declared that the government's concept of "the big society" places charities at the heart of civil society and reform, adding the public also has confidence in such bodies.

According to Dame Suzi, a recent survey found trust in voluntary organisations is high, while they are also expected to play a growing role over the coming years.

She warned, however, that "the cuts are going to come quick and they are going to go deep", with thousands of agencies already affected by the credit crunch in the past two years.

Groups seeking a UK insurance policy may also be interested in revised financial guidance published for the sector by the Charity Commission this month that covers issues such as risk management and internal controls.
