Families urged to check insurance details

Personal insurance

14th June 2010

The current insurance definitions of what a "family" consists of may be outdated in some cases, an analyst has suggested.

Research by Defaqto indicated there could be unforeseen problems for travellers if they do not check that policies cover their particular situation.

The company discovered that, for example, children or stepchildren who live with an ex-partner may not be included in a family policy, as many firms only insure youngsters resident with the adults they are holidaying with.

Author of the report and Defaqto head of research Brian Brown warned: "It's imperative that parents check the details of their travel insurance policies to ensure that they have the cover they need before travelling."

He particularly advised couples who are not married or have children from previous relationships to examine terms and conditions carefully, in addition to those permitting their offspring to journey alone, as this can also affect the legitimacy of family products.

Those seeking a UK insurance policy for travel this year may be interested in the news from the same firm that the number of products available has risen, in spite of a dip in the amount of journeys being taken over the past year.
