A new action plan has been unveiled by business secretary Vince Cable in an attempt to begin reducing the amount of red tape facing UK firms.
The coalition government says "excessive regulation" is stopping enterprises from flourishing and, as such, the proposals include the formation of a new "challenge group" that will invent non-regulatory ways of reaching environmental and social goals.
An immediate review of all rules and laws currently in the works will also be undertaken, while a cabinet "star chamber", chaired by Cable, will also being work to change the approach to new laws and ensure their cost is taken into account.
The business secretary - also Liberal Democrat MP for Twickenham - explained that a move away from the sole solution of regulation is needed.
He added: "This demands a radical change in culture away from the tick-box approach to regulation only as a last resort. It's a big task but one worth striving for."
