Home contents policies 'may not offer enough cover'

It is important to check carefully to ensure home contents policies provide adequate cover, as some offer less than £1,000 for items left "in the open".
This is the warning issued by Defaqto, which has discovered levels of protection can vary widely between products, with some excluding certain categories such as plants or pedal cycles.
As the weather improves and people start to spend more time outside, such clauses become more important and the firm advises inspecting documents to determine the cover they give for objects left in the garden or outside the boundary of properties.
Defaqto insight analyst for general insurance Mike Powell explained: "Water features, decking, garden furniture, outside lighting, gas barbecues, children's play things and plants can be expensive to replace and run into hundreds of pounds."
According to a survey by the financial research company, 42 per cent of home policies provide less than £1,000 for "contents in the open", 43 per cent offer £1,000 to £2,000 and only 15 per cent give over £2,000 worth of cover.
Those seeking a UK insurance policy for their home contents may also be interested to learn that new security technology is available that can significantly improve protection for domestic properties, according to owner and business strategist of Locked Up Monitored Security Martin West.
