The new government should prioritise improving social care reform, it has been claimed.

According to Carers UK, it must be made an urgent focus of the Conservative-Liberal Democrat coalition's actions as the country is facing "a crisis in our care system which cannot be ignored".

This is the view of Carers UK director of policy and public affairs Emily Holzhausen appealed to the new health secretary Andrew Lansley to address the "crumbling" care system, adding local authority cuts are impacting upon families, in addition to the existing postcode lottery.

"Clear plans must be brought forward as a matter of urgency, setting out a sustainable funding model for a fair, universal, and transparent care service," she stated.

Social care was a key issue raised during the televised leadership debates held before the May 6th General Election.

Liability insurance customers operating in the sector may also be interested in the news that Ms Holzhausen's comments have been echoed by the Alzheimer's Society.
