Growing UK housebuilding confidence "encouraging"

It is "encouraging" to see that optimism is growing within the UK's construction industry, one expert declares.

Home Builders Federation (HBF) head of communications Steve Turner suggests "the whole sector is much more positive than it was a year ago", with markets starting to stabilise.

However, he stresses it is too soon yet to be talking about a definitive recovery within the housebuilding sector.

According to Mr Turner, issues such as the need for increased mortgage availability and for constraints on land to be removed should be addressed in order to ensure the future success of the industry.

He was commenting in the wake of the latest Construction Purchasing Managers' Index, which revealed residential construction activity increased at its fastest place since August 2007 this April.

The figures from the Chartered Institute of Purchasing and Supply and Markit showed the second consecutive monthly rise in the sector, in addition to sharp growth in new order volumes, something that may interest liability insurance customers.
