Holiday compensation packages 'may differ'

Personal insurance

10th May 2010

Travellers heading overseas this year should be aware that compensation packages differ between airlines and tour operators.

This is the warning issued by a spokeswoman for the Association of Independent Tour Operators, who explained if delays occur as a result of the ash cloud emitted by the Icelandic volcano, "then the tour operator is obliged to sort everything out".

However, Sue Ockwell pointed out the same requirements do not apply to airlines, with such problems particularly affecting large families who face very high extra costs if they are stopped from flying because of grounded services.

She added that delayed travellers could also be worried about getting back to work, with tour operators able to assess options for passengers.

Airport closures have been announced across Europe, as a result of the plume of volcanic ash from Eyjafjallajokull in the south of Iceland.

The news about continued problems related to the volcanic eruption could prompt more people to take out a comprehensive UK insurance policy for their travel arrangements this summer.
