Car sharing 'won't affect UK insurance policies'

UK insurance policies may not be affected if a new bill is passed through parliament this week.

The assembly bill 1871 - which is due for a hearing today (May 5th) - will make sure that drivers' cover is not invalidated if their cars are publicly shared for a small amount of money, the Independent reports.

A company called WhipCar has been set up in London to coincide with this, which matches vehicle owners with those in need of wheels, allowing people to negotiate prices and make bookings via the internet.

The organisation automatically insures the motors for the agreed rental period, sitting alongside their existing policies - should a claim be made, these will not be affected.

Dave Jones - the assembly member who introduced the drafted legislation - said: "Individual car owners who do not use their vehicles for extended periods of time should be able to share their vehicles ... without the risk of losing their individual car insurance."
