Local pubs 'vital to community life'

Politicians standing at this year's General Election widely believe that pubs play a key role in community life.

This is according to a new poll by ComRes for the British Beer & Pub Association (BBPA) revealing 90 per cent of candidates believe more should be done to protect such institutions and 97 per cent view them as a vital part of British society.

In addition, 95 per cent felt hostelries make a valuable contribution to the country's economy and 320 prospective MPs have signed up to the organisation's Back the Pub pledge.

BBPA chief executive Brigid Simmonds suggested the survey shows candidates "recognise the importance of the pub to the fabric of local communities and the economic contribution that pubs make to the economy as a whole".

Establishments seeking pub insurance may also be interested in the news that a community co-operative in Hudswell, North Yorkshire, managed to save a local drinking venue The George and Dragon from folding.

This is according to the Co-operative Enterprise Hub - which provides advice and support to such endeavours and has suggested similar solutions could prevent the closure of some of the 40 pubs currently shutting their doors in the UK each week.
