North-west charities encourage volunteering

Charities

7th April 2010

Charities situated in the north-west of England are urging people to recognise the importance of volunteering to their operations.

The plea by non-profit bodies through Voluntary Sector North-west to councillors, MPs and decision makers in the region for additional support comes with the launch of a new campaign entitled Listen Value Invest.

The initiative highlights stories of both communities and individuals that have benefited from charity and voluntary work, such as training and mentoring projects.

Politicians and officials are called upon to "commit to listening, valuing and investing in the third sector" and to undertake "meaningful action".

"Third sector spending can often be identified as an easy cut to make and we call on all decision makers to stop and think before cutting third sector investment," Voluntary Sector North-west chief executive Richard Caulfield declared.

His comments come in the wake of a Charity Commission report based on a survey of more than 1,000 organisations, which indicated the economic downturn has affected 59 per cent of respondents.
