A Department of Health grant worth £40 million has been allocated to the care sector in order to boost end of life provision.
The cash, announced by care services minister, Phil Hope, will go to 123 hospices in the country to provide "more dignity and privacy" for those at the end of their lives.
It is intended to enhance and better equip facilities and support collaborations between hospices and care homes, as well as helping people to remain in their own homes if they wish.
Funding will be made available as part of the End of Life Care Strategy for a range of measures such as enhancing gardens to boost patient care and the installation of specialist apparatus to assist with bathing.
Mr Hope explained: "This grant will help hospices care for people's physical, emotional and social needs. It will support families and carers by providing welcoming spaces that promote dignity and respect."
