Inspections find one in four building sites failing

Construction

6th April 2010

Almost one in four construction sites attended by Health and Safety Executive (HSE) inspectors last month failed to meet adequate standards.

This is according to figures from the body revealing 2,014 locations and 2,414 contractors were surveyed across Britain.

According to HSE chief inspector for construction Philip White, although many small operators have improved their working practices more still needs to be done to ensure no employees are placed at risk.

"The fact that our inspectors needed to take enforcement action on almost a quarter of sites and on a similar proportion of contractors, is a matter of serious concern," he stated.

Intended to reduce incidents within the sector, the campaign of intensive unannounced inspections focused in particular on working at height after there were 53 construction-related deaths and 11,264 injuries in 2008-09.

Additionally, construction industry bosses seeking liability insurance are reminded that from April 6th, the rules governing certain types of tower cranes are changing, which may impact upon their operations.
