Government cracks down on burglaries

Personal insurance

30th March 2010

The UK government has unveiled new plans to combat burglaries and ensure households feel safer.

Under the Home Office proposals - which may appeal to those seeking a UK insurance policy - hi-tech equipment such as tracking devices, property marking kits and automatic number plate recognition systems will be employed to catch criminals.

These measures also include "trap houses" equipped with hidden cameras and tagged items to tempt burglars and catch them in the act of stealing.

Home Office minister Alan Campbell has pledged £2 million to the Securing Homes initiative, which will operate across 16 UK forces and is intended to deter as well as trap thieves.

"This new equipment will not only help police catch the criminals who harm communities, it will help prevent crime as well," Mr Campbell noted, adding 60,000 homes are being secured against burglary under additional plans.

A recent study by RIAS indicated households in the UK are risking losing billions of pounds by failing to reassess UK insurance cover in light of sharp rises in the price of gold and other precious metals in recent years.
