Progress to repair damage caused by devastating floods which struck Cumbria in November 2009 is "good".

This is the opinion of minister for flood recovery Rosie Winterton, who has praised reconstruction efforts in the county and the reopening of Main Street in Cockermouth.

Wordsworth's House has also reopened in time for tourist season and Ms Winterton said there were "clearly visible signs of recovery" following the extreme weather conditions.

"There are firm plans in place for continuing the recovery and the Government remains committed to supporting the recovery process," she declared, pointing to more than £10.7 million worth of public funding already committed to projects.

Successes achieved as part of progress to repair flood damage in the region include returning the Port of Workington to full operation, a temporary footbridge over the River Derwent at Workington and grant applications approved for 178 local businesses totaling more than £900,000.

Those seeking insurance for business may also be interested to learn that a decision by the Environment Agency to expand its flood warning system to more of the UK was welcomed as "good news" by Association of British Insurers media officer Kelly Ostler last month.
