BA strikes highlight importance of travel insurance

Personal insurance

19th March 2010

The latest plans by British Airways (BA) cabin crew to stage a series of strikes over pay and conditions have emphasised the need for good travel insurance.

A total of 1,100 out of 1,950 scheduled flights are being cancelled by the airline over three days from March 20th as a result of the planned walkouts.

Union members are also planning a further three days of industrial action from March 27th over pay and conditions.

Negotiations continued between joint general secretary of Unite Tony Woodley and Willie Walsh, BA chief executive in a bid to avert strike action but came to an end without a resolution on March 19th.

Cancelled flights are expected to have the greatest impact on those who have booked aspects of their trips overseas separately, as BA is only prepared to return the cost of flights, making a comprehensive UK insurance policy vital in such cases.

"All of our flights are continuing to operate as normal up until the first day of the strike," a statement from the airline has declared.
