Travel cover 'should protect against most eventualities'

Those taking trips overseas should ensure that they have a policy in place that will "cover most eventualities".

Advocating taking out "comprehensive travel insurance", a spokesman for the Association of Independent Tour Operators (AITO) noted it is of particular importance that travellers protect themselves against incidents during "any out of the ordinary activities" they may participate in while abroad.

Ian Bradley warned: "Many countries regularly update advice for travellers and insurance is just one of the ever changing variables."

His comments come after Cuba altered its legislation to make it mandatory for all visitors to have medical cover in place before entering the country and travellers will be expected to show documentation to prove a policy is in place before being allowed onto the Caribbean island.

However, a recent Lloyds TSB study indicated 35.6 million Britons will take overseas holidays as their main trip this year, with many already booking their annual break. However, 60 per cent of these people have not yet arranged a UK insurance policy.
