Households reminded to test smoke alarms

A number of celebrities have stated that they plan to conduct tests on their smoke alarms each week as part of a new government campaign.

The initiative is intended to raise awareness of the importance of regularly checking such devices and is backed by Sir Terry Wogan, Amir Khan, Ainsley Harriet, Jill Halfpenny, Debra Stevenson, Gurinder Chada, Aggie McKenzie, Darren Campbell, James Martin, Nihal, Dave Spikey and Bobby Friction.

Additionally, Coronation Street actresses Helen Flanagan and Brooke Vincent, who play sisters Rosie and Sophie Webster, have promised to promote fire safety as part of the Department of Communities and Local Government push.

"It's scary how quickly a house fire can spread and in so many cases, it's the smoke alarm that can make the difference between someone being able to escape in time, or not," Helen Flanagan explained, something that may interest those seeking a UK insurance policy.

The Push IT Pledge is encouraging households to test smoke alarms on a weekly basis and is part of the government's Fire Kills campaign, which also urges households to plan a safe escape in the event of a blaze at home.

A poll of almost 2,500 UK adults by Opinion Matters found that 85 per cent owned a spoke alarm, but less than one in three carry out tests each week.
