Report highlights care home postcode lottery

5th March 2010
The level of council-funded care available to elderly people is dependent upon where they live, it has been claimed.
According to an article in the Daily Mail, pensioners face a "postcode lottery" when it comes to care and whether or not it is funded by their local authority, with some residents having three times the chance of costs being covered than others.
Figures published by the newspaper indicate that variations do not reflect the levels of deprivation in various areas of the UK, indicating that provision is not going where it is most needed.
The news source stated that 3,000 people or more are forced to sell their homes annually in order to fund care and a drop of 16 per cent has been seen in those having their places in facilities funded during the past three years.
Anchor acting chief executive Jane Ashcroft declared that people are being "left to the vagaries of local decision-making" and levels of care should be consistent across the country.
The government launched a debate on the future of social care in the UK last year.
