Changes to planning system 'to assist developers'

Construction

5th March 2010

Plans by the government to reduce red tape will help developers to save time and money.

This is according to the Department for Communities and Local Government, which claims that the proposed package of reforms will assist in the completion of projects.

It is intended to help boost the UK's economic recovery by permitting firms more time to finish new developments and extend existing planning permissions.

Parliament has given the green light to the changes and planning minister John Healey declared: "The planning system has to adapt to current economic circumstances to help homeowners, industry and developers, and we have done just that."

It is estimated the new measures will save companies as much as £69 million a year, freeing up new investment capital and expediting the completion of schemes, while small firms will also be able to claim compensation for disruptions caused by compulsory purchase orders and new public works.

Construction firms seeking a UK insurance policy are also advised that the government has launched a new Warm Homes, Greener Homes Strategy in a bid to ensure homes are greener and more sustainable.
