The UK's small business owners are urged to take note of changes to legislation regarding the blacklisting of trade union members.
Under the new Department for Business, Innovation and Skills regulations, firms will no longer be able to deny individuals employment based on their membership of such organisations.
Companies failing to adhere to new rules outlawing the practice could face fines, highlighting the importance of having good liability insurance in place to protect against failure to comply with changes to employment regulations.
"Good employers who operate fair and open vetting processes have nothing to fear from these regulations," employment relations minister Lord Young stated.
The government's decision to ban blacklisting follows an extensive public consultation on the issue in the wake of evidence indicating that construction sector businesses had been vetting workers illegally.
An unlawful database used by 40 construction businesses for vetting construction workers was closed under information protection law.
