By opting to arrange their own travel and accommodation when heading overseas, British holidaymakers are saving an average of £423 each on the price of a break.

This is according to new research which indicates that travellers are avoiding paying £4.92 billion each year by cutting out travel agents and tour operators and going directly to providers.

Conducted by Santander Cards, the survey also discovered that Brits are getting bolder when it comes to haggling, with many prepared to ask for upgrades to aircraft seats or hotel rooms and often experiencing success.

"It's not surprising that in the current economic climate, holidaymakers are increasingly looking for value," director of Santander Cards Emma Roberts said.

Average holiday spend in 2009 among respondents was £1,315, with the most popular methods of reducing costs including booking online and contacting hotels directly, something that may be of interest to those seeking a UK insurance policy.

A recent Sainsbury's poll found that 13 per cent of those booking their annual summer holiday during the first weeks of 2010 were not planning to buy cover and 45 per cent planned to do so at a later date.
