Further cold weather 'could damage pipes'

Weather forecasters are predicting further freezing weather over the next few weeks and homeowners are being urged to guard against the cold.
Sub-zero temperatures can cause pipes to freeze, potentially causing water damage as weather thaws as cracks can appear in plumbing systems.
Although the majority of home insurance policies protect against such incidents, Direct Line head Andrew Lowe warns: "Precious belongings can't always be replaced and the time and intrusion required to complete proper repairs can be a hassle."
Simple measures such as ensuring that pipes are well-insulated, wrapping outside pipes with covering, keeping documents in waterproof containers and setting heating systems at a low level can all prevent problems when temperatures plummet.
Those seeking a UK insurance policy for their home and contents may also like to note that the Consumer Council for Water advised households after the recent freeze to examine their properties for damage such as leaks and cracks in order to identify and address problems quickly.
