Extension of flood warning system 'will assist homeowners'

An insurance expert has welcomed a decision by the Environment Agency to expand its flood warning system to cover an additional half a million homes in the UK.
Kelly Ostler Coyle, Association of British Insurers (ABI) media officer, explained that "this is good news for home owners and business and sensible advice".
"Insurers already use the EA's flood maps and in some cases their own digital mapping," she explained.
Ms Ostler stressed that the move does not mean that any more properties have been deemed to be at risk of flooding, just that more are now covered by the Environment Agency service.
Consumers seeking a UK insurance policy may also be interested to note that the ABI spokeswoman warned the move will not have an impact on house insurance premiums for those living in areas deemed to be at risk.
The Environment Agency's expansion of its flood warning system follows recommendations made in the Pitt Review of incidents that occurred in summer 2007 and more than doubles the total register of properties to nearly one million.
