New pint glass design 'may reduce injury'

If a new design for pint glasses reduces the number of injuries taking place each year it is to be welcomed.

This is the opinion of British Beer and Pub Association (BBPA) regional secretary for the north of England Lee Le Clercq, who praised the Design Council for the vessel.

A pair of revolutionary new prototypes has been created for pint glasses using resin to ensure they are stronger than current versions.

The structure, which either coats each vessel in the substance or sandwiches a layer of it between glass, binds shards together in the event of a breakage to reduce the risk of injury.

This is likely to be good news for pub insurance customers and could result in a fall in claims, with Mr Le Clercq noting that the only potential drawbacks posed would be cost and the appearance of glasses after "thousands of washes".

"We are encouraged that the Design Council have come up with something made of glass, we are very pleased about that," he stated.

An estimated 87,000 glass attacks take place each year and the home secretary Alan Johnson unveiled the new safer versions at the Design Council. They were created as part of the Design Out Crime programme.
