Gap and adventure travellers 'should be aware of dangers'

Personal insurance

5th February 2010

Many travellers setting off on a gap year or other adventure break are "unaware of the dangers" and are placing themselves at risk of theft.

This is the warning delivered by Nomad spokeswoman Cathy Goodyer, who urged such people to take out a UK insurance policy that covers them for threats before they set off.

She cautioned that many gap year trips are to countries "where people are pretty desperate" and do not have access to social security or national healthcare.

The travellers' equipment company representative urged: "Get insurance so if anything happens you can get yourself sorted out and get back home at least."

Ms Gooyer added that precautions such as money belts can only offer a certain degree of safety and taking cash out in public can create "sitting targets".

Her comments come as a study by Sainsbury's suggested that around 13 per cent of those booking holidays during the first weeks of 2010 are not planning to purchase cover at all, while 45 per cent are looking to do so at a later date.
