Most ways to reduce premiums 'in drivers' control'

Personal insurance

The majority of ways of reducing motor insurance premiums are in the hands of motorists rather than providers.

Neil Greig, Institute of Advanced Motoring director of policy and research, explained that measures such as taking advanced driving lessons can push down the costs of cover.

"When buying a car, you want to look for one in a lower insurance bracket," he explained, adding that such information is usually available in the documentation provided alongside vehicles before a purchase is made.

According to Mr Greig, having an alarm system fitted to vehicles can further reduce the price of a UK insurance policy, as can keeping cars in a garage overnight.

"With the more expensive [car] models make sure they are fitted with a Thatcham alarm," he advised, referring to a research body that sets standards for such devices.

The expert's comments follow figures recently released by Consumer Intelligence indicating that average national premiums have risen by 20 per cent in the past year to £564.69.
