Companies are urged to take note of new legislation being laid before parliament that will provide agency workers with new rights.
With an estimated 1.3 million people employed in such a way in the UK, the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills has suggested that the proposed changes will provide employers with additional flexibility.
The plans have been agreed to by the Trades Union Congress and the Confederation of British Industry and will offer agency staff the same rights to holidays, pay and basic working condition as permanent staff after they have spent 12 weeks in a post.
Intended to implement a European Union (EU) directive on the issue, business minister Pat McFadden said that the Agency Workers Regulations 2010 have been achieved by engaging with the EU on the issue and described the package of measures as "sensible and balanced".
