Company bosses are advised that they could face legal action if they do not ensure workers have insurance that covers business use when they make work-related trips in their own vehicles.

According to a new poll, workers are driving an average of 251 business miles per month, but only 38 per cent of drivers reported that their employers discussed the need for cover when taking business journeys by car.

The survey by website Gocompare.com revealed more than one in three (35 per cent) respondents' motor insurance does not cover them for any business use of their own vehicle, which can include driving to sites for their job other than their usual place of work, such as training course venues and visiting the bank.

After 72 per cent of motorists quizzed said they had used their car for business in the past year, the portal's business development director Lee Griffin said: "Employers have a legal responsibility to ensure that, irrespective of its owner, vehicles used on company business are safe to use."

In related news, those seeking a UK insurance policy are advised that male drivers were more likely than women to take unnecessary risks behind the wheel in the recent winter weather conditions following research published by ICM.
