Freezing weather 'could cost small firms billions'

Britain's economy could take a severe hit from the current winter chill and small business owners seeking a UK insurance policy are advised to protect against disruption caused by such events.
The current snow and ice is estimated to be costing British businesses as much as £690 million a day, with the weather disrupting operations and impacting upon retail sales.
With as many as 20 per cent of office workers failing to travel into work during similar conditions in February 2009, effective business continuity planning and cover can help small companies to survive such problems.
"For those who work in offices, ensuring employees can log in to office systems from home will save businesses a lot of aggravation and lost revenue when staff are snowed in," RSA media relations manager Marc Charlton commented.
The Met Office has predicted further cold spells and snow falls across Britain and businesses are advised of the importance of protecting against weather-related incidents such as flood damage or burst pipes.
