Motorists have been warned in the current snow and ice not to leave their cars at risk of theft and shelter indoors from the cold.
According to advice from the Association of British Insurers (ABI), leaving vehicles unattended with the keys in and the engine running while they defrost can end in a claim being filed.
The organisation recommends that those seeking a UK insurance policy remain with their car as a number of reports have been released in recent weeks of thieves making off with vehicles.
Figures from police in Greater Manchester, for example, revealed that four vehicles were stolen in this way within just one morning.
In such cases, failure to watch cars while they are thawing out in freezing conditions could lead to a claim being rejected as it could be perceived as a failure to take reasonable care
"Stay with your vehicle while it warms up, so that it is you that drives away in a warm car, not a thief," ABI director of general insurance and health Nick Starling remarked.
Before driving in winter weather conditions, the ABI has advised motorists to check their policies to see what they are covered for in terms of accidents and breakdowns.
