The Boxing Day sales this year witnessed a record number of shoppers in attendance, it has been claimed.

Data from Experian indicated that the number of people hitting the sales the day after Christmas reached the highest level ever reported, with an estimated 12 million customers heading for the shops.

According to the analyst, an 18.6 per cent rise was noted in the volume of Boxing Day shoppers compared with the same time in 2008.

Taking place on a Saturday this year, Boxing Day was dubbed "Super Saturday", with millions of bargain hunters heading for UK high streets and malls.

Ahead of the Boxing Day sales, Experian director of retail and property Jonathan de Mello claimed that the "major shopping day" would be "absolutely crucial" for retailers.

He was commenting after disappointing sales figures for the sector and shop insurance customers may be interested to note that bad weather affected revenues in the run-up to Christmas this year.
