Homeowners urged to guard against thieves

British homeowners have been offered advice by the Home Office about helping to prevent theft.

According to the government department, ensuring that properties and belongings are not exposed to criminals can help to stop incidents from taking place.

Tips include ensuring doors and windows are locked, putting bank statements, laptops, car keys and other items out of sight and securing vehicles, which may interest those seeking a UK insurance policy.

Launched by Home Office minister Alan Campbell, a new campaign will run across a range of forms - including press, the internet and television - for the next eight weeks highlighting a series of crime prevention messages.

"Burglars are opportunists and by doing the simple things you can easily protect your home from them," former burglar and crime prevention expert Michael Fraser explained, adding: "The best advice is the simplest advice; don’t advertise your belongings to thieves."

Earlier this month the Department for Communities and Local Government highlighted the potential risks posed by candles, flammable decorations or faulty fairy lights during Christmas, with accidental blazes increasing over the festive period.
