Car owners should make sure that their vehicles are well maintained and prepared for bad weather during the current spell of wintery conditions.
This is according to the Post Office, which suggested that almost half (48 per cent) of drivers quizzed had cut corners with regards to repairs and maintenance over the past year in order to save cash.
However, the organisation warned this can be counter-productive especially in difficult conditions and such motorists are putting their own and that of others at risk.
Owners seeking a UK insurance policy are advised not to delay servicing in order to reduce expenditure after a survey found 29 per cent of drivers have done so, with many others ignoring problems, fixing vehicles themselves or turning to someone they know to address them.
"Failing to maintain your car could even result in it being deemed unroadworthy and therefore invalidate your insurance," Richard Pennant-Jones of the Post Office warned.
In related news, a recent poll of 3,000 motorists discovered that 73 per cent had placed personal items at risk in cars by leaving them on show.
