Drivers are increasingly leaving items of value on view in their cars, which can tempt thieves, new research has indicated.
The study warned against complacency and noted the number of motorists concerned about having their vehicle broken into or taken has fallen over the past year.
A poll of 3,000 motorists discovered almost three-quarters (73 per cent) had left personal effects on display and unattended, an increase from 71 per cent in 2008, with items including coats, jackets, CDs and mp3 players.
Commenting on the Admiral survey, the company's managing director Sue Longthorn said: "At this time of year, people will often leave their Christmas shopping on show on the back seat of their car. For a criminal this is an open invitation."
Meanwhile, a recent report by valuation firm HPI revealed the models most at risk of theft are compact executive-style vehicles and 4x4s, accounting for around one in four cars taken by criminals.
