The Welsh assembly government has signed a new pledge Health and Safety Executive (HSE) to reduce the number of people in the country killed or injured at work.
First minister Rhodri Morgan stated that although strides have been made to reduce incidents, companies need to commit more fully to health and safety and risk management policies.
"Work related accidents can be avoided and it is important that people are made to feel safe while going about their job," he said.
Official data showed a total of five people died in work-related accidents during 2008-09 in Wales, while 1.5 million employment days were lost as a result of illness relating to jobs and 1,600 people sustained serious injuries during their occupation.
Liability insurance customers may also be interested to note that across the UK, 1.2 million people suffered from an illness which they believed to have been caused by or worsened by their work, both past and present.
