Nursing homes 'striving to meet standards'

Despite financial constraints, most care homes in Britain are "constantly striving to meet national care standards", an expert has declared.
According to a spokesman from the Registered Nursing Home Association (RNHA), older people in the UK need to be empowered to "choose the type of care that best meets their needs" and resources should be put in place to allow this to happen
His comments follow a report from the Care Quality Commission, which indicated one in six elderly care homes are failing to provide adequate care.
However, the RNHA representative pointed out a Royal College of Nursing survey discovered 63 per cent of nurses in such facilities believe that there are enough staff to provide residents with sufficient standards of service, compared with 36 per cent of those working on NHS wards for older people.
He also noted the care sector faces "significant funding pressures" and urged officials to place a greater emphasis on care of the elderly.
Nursing homes seeking a UK insurance policy may also be interested to learn the Care Quality Commission annual study noted 95 per cent of local authorities are now rated as performing either well or excellently.
