Executive-style vehicles and 4x4s 'highest theft risk'

Personal insurance

3rd December 2009

Compact executive-style cars and 4x4s are the most popular vehicles with thieves, a new study has claimed.

According to research by valuation firm HPI, such models account for around one in four vehicles registered by the company as stolen, while roadsters and small family cars each account for eight per cent of thefts.

The company reported that younger motors, between four and eight years of age, are most likely to be taken and advised drivers to beat criminals by thoroughly checking any vehicle they purchase to ensure that it is legal.

Meanwhile, HPI consumer services manager Nicola Johnson warned everyday models, as well as prestige cars, are at risk.

"We therefore strongly advise buyers to conduct a vehicle history check, which can identify stolen vehicles as well as protect the consumer financially," she explained.

Earlier this season, Zurich Connect reminded UK insurance policy customers of the greater risk of accidents involving vehicles as the evenings get darker and the weather worsens.
