Homeowners warned to take care this Christmas

Many people are unaware of the potential danger or damage that can be caused by a failure to take precautions over the Christmas period.

This is the warning at the centre of a new government campaign highlighting the risks that can be posed by candles, flammable decorations or faulty fairy lights.

According to the Department for Communities and Local Government, people are often unaware such items can be a fire hazard and latest statistics reveal ten per cent of the 33,000 accidental house blazes taking place in 2008 occurred around Christmas.

The Fire Kills initiative is urging people to install smoke alarms, plan escape routes and test detectors regularly in order to have a happy and safe Christmas 2009.

"People are particularly vulnerable at Christmas for many reasons ranging from unsafe electrical decorations, unattended candles through to cooking whilst drunk," chief fire and rescue advisor Sir Ken Knight explained.

Those seeking a UK insurance policy are also warned of the risk associated with leaving homes unattended during the Christmas period, particularly when they are full of expensive gifts that could prove tempting to thieves.
